· More advanced students will draw from three dimensional objects, illustrations, portraits, etc.

· Introduced to a new subject matter and exercises each week.

· Exposed to art history and styles such as realism, abstract, impressionism, classical, fauvism, etc.

· Instructed in color theory, perspective and composition.

· Classical music is played during class.

Ancient Mosaic






In this lesson I will introduce the art of mosaic. We will have a discussion on the development and importance it had in the progression of the visual arts through ancient history. The students can then choose a motif and after the drawing is complete they can proceed in laying the "tesserae". This is a great introduction to the concept of real stone and glass mosaics.

Humpback Whale





In this class the students will learn about the humpback whale. I will play the beautiful sounds they make and then we will draw a humpback whale in the ocean. Some students even add a baby whale! Above drawing were done by students age 7 to 10.

Huichol Art






In this lesson students will learn about the Huichol people of Mexico and there incredible art. I will read several children books that beautifully illustrate their unusual art form and after drawing an animal and other typical designs in the style of Huichal art the students will roll clay out to mimic yarn and glue it on their drawing. The results are just stunning!

Redoute' botanical illustrations





In this class we will learn about the 18th Century Belgian artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute' and use his wonderful botanical illustrations as our inspiration. I will teach the importance that illustrators have played through the history of Botany and the students will have real flowers to draw from. They will be amazed at how many different ways you can draw flowers. Above illustrations were done by students age 7 to 10.

Mola Art and The Kuna Culture





In this lesson students will be introduced to the Kuna Culture of Panama and Colombia and after viewing examples of "Mola Art" they will use it as inspiration for final designs.

Paul Klee-Abstract Cityscape






In this lesson I will introduce the swiss artist Paul Klee and discuss his painting "Castle and Sun"painted in 1928. Then using tissue paper the student will learn to use the space on their paper to create a two and three dimensional city scape. The work above were done by students age 7 to 10.

Blue Footed Booby






In today's lesson I will begin reading a beautifully illustrated book "Booby Hatch" and then after viewing a short documentary on this very amusing and clumsy bird we will learn to draw it and then color our picture. There are lots of giggles during this lesson! The drawings pictured above are done by students age 7 to 9.

Matisse Paper Cut-Outs!


In this lesson I will talk about the artist Henri Matisse and discuss is later works. After being diagnosed with cancer he was confined to a wheel chair and for the last 14 years of his life he discovered a liberating way of using his creativity. He left behind the brushes and canvases and used scissors and bright colored paper to create what art historians believe where his most unique and exciting works. Henri considered this part of his life the most happy and fulfilling! This is a fun lesson for the students especially after realizing that a simple idea can indeed become a great work of art!

Aboriginal Dreamings





In this week's lesson I will talk about the Aboriginal culture and how through art they connect to the spiritual world. The students will listen to typical Aboriginal music and I will show them many examples of animal paintings done by the Aboriginals. The students will paint using tempera followed by a sequence of dots. Above art work was done by 6, 8 an 9 year old students.

Chameleon






In this lesson I will read "Chameleons are Cool" a beautifully illustrated book and then we will draw and color a Chameleon. The kids just love trying to make their Chameleon "stand" out. Fun, fun, fun!

One Dot...

In this lesson I will read "The Dot", by Peter J. Reynolds and then the students inspired by the story will start a work of art from one simple dot. Then they will fill in the spaces with different designs. Student always have fun doing non-representational designs. It's amazing how many things they discover inside their drawings!

James McNeill Whistler and the Peacock Room






In this lesson I will discuss the 19th century artist James McNeill Whistler and talk about the "Peacock Room" which is now in the Free Gallery. After viewing images of Whistler decorative paintings of these magnificent birds the student will draw and color a beautiful peacock.

Maynard Dixon's landscapes and One Point Prospective





In this lesson we will first have a short discussion and hands on practice on cool and warm colors and how important it is to know the subtle differences when painting a landscape. I will then introduce one point prospective. A road to the horizon line. I will discuss the american artist Maynard Dixon and show numerous images of his work. I will demonstrate how to draw clouds. No more cotton balls in the skies! They will learn about foreground, middle ground and distant ground and the importance of using color and value to create the illusion of distance.

Figure in Motion






In this lesson I will teach the students how to draw realistic people and how easy it is. No more stick figures! I want ovals on necks and not circles on shoulders! I will demonstrate the proportions of the human body and head. The students will draw a running figure and use their imagination for the background. Beach, grass field, running after a soccer ball, etc.
